Social care firms going bust up by 50%

On a day that Southern Cross announced it will be transferring all its homes to other providers and closing its business, it’s a worrying time for thousands of people in care homes.

The Guardian reported last week that firms offering residential care for vulnerable people are going bust in a perfect storm of cuts to local authority budgets, changing purchasing and commissioning behaviour and increasing operating costs. Insolvencies were up 50% in the first six months of this year amidst concerns that the quality of care and support offered to vulnerable people might suffer.

The report brings into sharp relief the pressures highlighted in the recent Laing and Buisson study into care and support arrangements for people with learning disabilities. The report, commissioned by the Department of Health, set out the reasons why residential care home businesses are starting to fail and why they are finding it difficult to re-invest in modernised housing and support services. Chief amongst the barriers to re-investment identified in the report is the critical shortage of decent and affordable housing options for disabled people.
